What is ALS?

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), you may be wondering what it means. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) affects the central nervous system, making it difficult for the brain's messages to get to muscles.

ALS Symptoms

As Lou Gehrig's disease progresses, the brain has more and more trouble communicating messages to the muscles in the body. As a result, muscles weaken and make daily tasks difficult or even impossible.

ALS Treatment

Some medications may provide relief for ALS symptoms. Physical therapies can help with muscle rehabilitation, while supportive therapies can be used to treat secondary symptoms.

Living With ALS

For those living with ALS, many daily tasks become difficult. Maintaining good health becomes vitally important. Tips for exercise, diet and even travel can help.
